What a free mystery box actually is

It is a box you open on screen without paying for the roll. That is all the word free covers.

LuxDrop and PackDraw call theirs free packs, because both call themselves pack opening sites now. Same thing, different label.

There are three kinds, and they behave very differently.

Sign-up boxes. One to three boxes for making an account and confirming your email. LuxDrop gives 3, RillaBox a Starter box, PackDraw a set of sign-up packs.

Daily boxes. One box per day for as long as you keep coming back. RillaBox’s opens with no deposit. LuxDrop’s are tied to levels and a deposit.

Level boxes. Rewards for the amount you have played. They are free the way a tenth coffee on a loyalty card is free.

What is it not? A parcel. No site here posts you a free mystery box by mail. If a free pull lands on a real item you can have it shipped, and shipping is on you.

What is inside a free box?

A very small table with a very good item at the top of it. We read three.

One in a million for the iPhone 15 Plus. One in 16,000 for the Dunk Low. Those are real odds on real items, and they are printed.

Now the other end. On RillaBox’s Daily Free box, 80% of opens are a voucher worth one or two cents. On LuxDrop’s Level 2 pack it is 96.1% for one cent.

Add the whole table up and LuxDrop’s Level 2 pack is worth about two cents per open. That is not a complaint. It is free. It is just worth knowing before you set an alarm for it.

And the paid boxes? Every paid table we added up on LuxDrop pays back 90%. A free box is the same machine with a smaller table.

Where free stops: the deposit gates

Every free ladder has a rung where the site asks for money. It is worth knowing which rung.

LuxDrop. The 3 sign-up packs are free. The daily packs are not quite. They unlock by level, from level 2 up to level 150, and ours showed LOCKED at $0.00 of $5 after $187 of play. The counter wants a deposit.

RillaBox. The daily box is free, full stop. The level boxes unlock at level 5, 10, 20 and on up to 100, and every one of them wants a $25 deposit in the last 60 days.

We reached level 5 and tried. The box said Not Eligible.

PackDraw. No deposit gate that we found, but the free packs sit behind levels, and levels take play. $91.70 moved us 31 points of one level, and the level 2 pack was still locked.

What did pay on PackDraw was the rewards page. A daily claim of $0.13 and a weekly one of $0.18 after $58.40 of packs. About half a cent back per dollar. Cute, not a strategy.

There is also a daily raffle with a $2,500 pool and 20 winners. Tickets need a spend of $1 or more, so free is a stretch.

Is any of that a trick? Not really. It is a loyalty scheme, and it is printed on the rewards page. It just is not what most people mean when they type free.

Can you cash out what a free box pays?

In theory yes. In practice the minimums get in the way.

A free pull lands as balance or as an item you can sell back. Balance only leaves as crypto, and only above the minimum: $10 on LuxDrop, $15 on PackDraw, $25 on RillaBox.

A 1-cent voucher is 2,499 cents short of RillaBox’s.

LuxDrop adds two more lines. The cashier showed a $5.51 fee on a $10 Bitcoin withdrawal, and part of our balance sat behind a rollover that has to be played through first.

So treat a free win as credit for one more box, not as money. If a free pull ever lands on the sneakers, every site here will ask for ID before it ships.

Free box codes: where they go and why they fail

Most free boxes are tied to a code or a sign-up link. Ours is BETTERCHECKED on all three sites, and most failed claims come down to the order you did things in.

First, the right field. LuxDrop takes the code in the Promocode field on its Rewards page.

PackDraw takes it in the deposit window, under Affiliate Code. Its sign-up packs need our code as well, so arrive through our link and enter the code before anything else.

And when it still fails, it is usually one of these.

• Email not verified. Nothing unlocks before that. PackDraw fails silently if you skip it.
• Signed up cold. On PackDraw the sign-up link sets the offer the moment you land. There is no field that fixes it afterwards.

What to check before you chase a free box

• What unlocks it. A code, an email, a level or a deposit. Only the first two are free.
• The table. Free boxes print their odds like paid ones. Read the bottom line, because that is the pull you will get.
• How often. Once, daily or per level. RillaBox’s daily box is the only one here that repeats without a deposit.
• The withdrawal minimum. $10, $15 or $25. A free balance under it is for playing, not for withdrawing.
• What it costs you anyway. An email address, and later an ID check. LuxDrop mails reminders to accounts that have not deposited.
